Imagine an old church, partial roof, broken windows, paint stripped from its walls… It’s a rough neighborhood, a community where shoes are a rarity, a place that is home to the highest rate of teen prostitution. This place is Huddersfield, located in the St. Mary parish of Jamaica, one of the smallest and poorest parishes of Jamaica. This old church is now the perfect spot to welcome volunteers with the 1000 Smiles project. The Great Shape! Inc. team will arrive at this clinic on Monday.
There is just one dentist for every 80,000 people in rural Jamaica, and Huddersfield certainly does not receive much, if any of the help. This area is so in need of dental care that at the last second, Great Shape! decided Huddersfield had to be added to the list. This will be clinic number four in the St. Mary’s parish; all open Sept. 28th through Oct. 9, 2009.
A special thanks goes out to all of the Jamaican volunteers that have helped set up the clinics, and to all of our 1000 Smiles volunteers. All their hard work will be seen in the bright smiles and glowing faces of thousands of Jamaicans.
