Great Shape!‘s Teach the Teachers 2013 volunteer, Bruce Broding, traveled to Negril, JA to provide resources and education meant to empower teachers of Jamaica. As a return volunteer, Bruce knew he would change lives and have a powerful experience of his own. However, the trip held meaningful surprises for this superstar volunteer just as Jamaica and Great Shape! usually do.
Traveling this time with just his son-in-law was an experience unlike any other Great Shape! trip in the past. “Watching [my son-in-law] Chris shine as a teacher,” Bruce describes as his greatest joy moment of the trip. “I think I learned more about him in that two weeks than I have in the past 12+ years I have known him and he has been a part of my family.”
Even gratitude he had seen before continued to surprise him. “I’m always impressed by how much the Jamaica teachers appreciate our efforts. I’ve been in many situations where I felt like I tried to help, but was treated like an intruder… that NEVER happens with the Jamaican teachers. They make giving so easy,” Bruce explains.
“The project is not only for the Jamaican teachers, but just as important for the individual development of members of the GS team,” tells Bruce. His words put the importance of Great Shape!’s trips into perfect perspective for the volunteer.
Teach the Teachers 2013 taught us a new surprise is always around the corner. Especially if it’s a street corner of Jamaica, busy with rich culture and under construction with personal development.
