In honor of our Fun-Raiser, we have decided to dedicate this portion of our “Did You Know?” series to simply FUN facts about Jamaica!

Jamaica has more Olympic medals than Portugal, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Iceland, Singapore, and Kuwait combined. Jamaica has competed in the Summer Olympic Games 15 times and the Winter Olympic Games 5 times.

Jamaica was the first country in the Western World to construct a railway, even before the United States!

Jamaica is home to the second largest butterfly in the world – the Giant Swallowtail.

Jamaica stands strong in 3rd place on the list of countries to win the most Miss World titles. Only India and Venezuela hold more.

It was Harry Belafonte who first called Jamaica “Island in the Sun.”

Ian Fleming designed his home called “Goldeneye” in Jamaica and wrote ten of his James Bond novels there.

Ackee, the Jamaican national fruit, is often eaten for breakfast. However, if the fruit is opened before it is ripe, it gives off a poison which can be fatal.

If you had fun reading these facts, we guarantee you’ll have even more fun attending our annual Fun-Raiser, June 26, 2010 in Ashland, OR.
