Great Shape! SuperKids is the evolution of the Book in a Bag project. In 2006, Great Shape! partnered with First Book. Together, they bring books from the United States and put them in the hands of Jamaican children! The first SuperKids volunteers brought nearly 5,000 books with them to Jamaica.
Students fill their bags with books, take them home, and enjoy the wonderful world of reading. Then, they bring the books back and trade them for others.
The 2009 SuperKids project starts November 7th and runs through the 22nd. But volunteers are already busy collecting books for the program.
Some of the books collected so far include: “Diego’s Animal Friends”, “Agent Out-Fearless FBI”, “Blueprints and Bloopers” and “It’s Sports Day”. Books are separated into age categories ranging from zero to nine years old.
In cooperation with First Book 6,752 total books have been collected so far from schools across the nation. Project leader, Georgene Crowe, hopes to ship more than 11,000 books to Jamaica this November.
SuperKids Co-Leader, Gretchen Lee says, “We are so thankful for our continued partnership with First Book and all the children who now have books in their hands.”
Volunteers are still needed for the second week of SuperKids! If you are interested in volunteering contact Georgene Crowe at reggaegeo@charter.net. You can also learn more at the Great Shape! website.
Thank you donors and volunteers! Look forward to those books kids!
