On Thursday, June 18th, Kay Knack (Likkle Miss) and I (Chelsea Dannen) went on a mission to recruit more teacher volunteers for SuperKids! We were invited to set up a table at the Midnite reggae concert at the Crystal Ballroom in downtown Portland, Oregon. We arrived to hear Ras Danny’s upbeat reggae tunes blasting and people already starting to dance to the music. As we set up a table filled with Great Shape! Inc. fliers, pictures, and other Jamaican memorabilia, many people stopped by with curious looks—so we jumped at the opportunities to talk about Great Shape!
Likkle Miss is an absolute rockstar at telling people about Great Shape! and why they should volunteer with our projects. I followed her lead and handed out many information cards and fliers to prospective volunteers. Although stopping passersby and telling them of Great Shape! was good, it was Likkle Miss’s presentation right before Midnite’s entrance that really got people excited. In front of a packed crowd of reggae fans, she called out to laid-off teachers and encouraged all to come learn more and GET INVOLVED! All together, we got a total of 13 prospective volunteers, including many teachers!
I had never been so excited and proud to be involved with Great Shape! Inc. as I was being able to work with Likkle Miss and get hands-on with recruiting volunteers. Whenever these opportunities are presented to us, we must take advantage of them! Thank you to all of the volunteers who give us so much to be excited about!
