Recruiting Super Individuals for SuperKids

April 4, 2014greatshapeincUncategorized
This Q&A with Super-Star volunteer Cher Gauweiler will undoubtedly motivate you to volunteer for our one of a kind SuperKids project. Visit our SUPERKIDS tab on our

What was your greatest joy moment when volunteering on SuperKids?
I would have to say when I returned to Kendal Primary for the second year in the row. I worked primarily with grades 3, 4, and 5. The teacher for grade 6 asked if I would come in and teach her students as well. When I arrived, the students I worked with the prior year when they were in grade 5 started cheering. I had to take a minute and compose myself because I was literally “choked up.” After that, I said, “I told you I would come back!” I’ll never forget that moment.

Why did you volunteer in the first place?
When I first heard about SuperKids in 2009, I thought the program was “too good to be true.” I love teaching children of all ages. The possibility to spend time in another country to promote literacy was an opportunity I had to learn more about. I am so glad that I took the time to travel to Jamaica in 2009 and then again in 2012 and 2013. I can now say that I am a proud part of the Great Shape, Inc. family.

How life changing was this experience?
Hardly a day goes by that I don’t connect or think about Jamaica. The program changes you in every possible way. It makes you more appreciative of everything from air conditioning to school supplies like sticky notes and pencils. I have pictures in my office and at home with the lovely Jamaicans I met. I never tire of seeing the children’s happy faces!

How much love and gratitude did you receive for your services?
There is no way to quantify this question. It’s a feeling that you have volunteering the minute the children recognize the shuttle bus. You see it in their eyes and smiles that you are a valued visitor of their school and community. Teaching the children and working with the teachers was the best part – every day I left the school sad that the day was already over and looking forward to returning the following day.
