SuperKids 2012 Literacy Project
Do you feel the call to service? Does working towards progress and equality in the third world appeal to you? Are you a big hearted, fun-loving, caring person? We bet you are! You are just who we are looking for to join our team in Jamaica this fall! This year do something big, something memorable…
“Be the change you want to see in the world.” –Mahatma Gandhi
Literacy rates in rural Jamaica sit around just 40%. Books and computers are hard to come by, and schools are often in such a state of disrepair that it distracts from learning. Children in rural Jamaica often cannot afford the $15 fee to pay for a school uniform. SuperKids was created in 2008 to bring literacy education to the children of Jamaica, to provide basic educational resources and to facilitate empowerment and growth.
SuperKids co-directors Georgene Crowe, Gretchen Lee, and Brad Adams each bring their own expertise and passion to the table while providing literacy education to rural Jamaica. Professional educators and humanitarians, they have led SuperKids to great success over the past 4 years. Last year, 65 volunteers from all over the world joined SuperKids bringing 25,000 books, 80 computers, uniforms, sports equipment, art supplies, environmental education and more to children in Jamaica. SuperKids partners with First Book and Scholastic to provide books. Volunteers work year ‘round gathering school supplies, and Brad Adams works hard rescuing computers, refurbishing them like new and updating them with the latest software.
For three weeks Georgene, Gretchen, Brad and dozens of amazing volunteers join together in Jamaica to pull off the giant literacy project that SuperKids is. By day, volunteers deliver books, set up computer labs, train teachers on the computers, lead classrooms of children in reading education, teach environmental education and more. By night, our volunteers relax at the beach, enjoy the pool, dancing and nightlife at Sandals resorts. Whew… what a full and joyous life.
Now, what are you waiting for?
This is your opportunity to facilitate your own empowerment and growth, and make a positive impact in the lives of thousands of children. Become a SuperKids volunteer today and experience the beauty of Jamaica, make life-long friends, and make a real and powerful difference in our world.
